Petsumer Report
"It's about time somebody told me!"

Your pet’s food label SHOULD tell you…

  • If the food contains imported ingredients from risky countries such as China...
  • If the food uses choice human grade ingredients or a much lesser quality grade of ingredients...
  • If the food contains risky chemicals linked to cancer...
  • If the pet food actually contains meat! (many don't) ...

But it doesn't.

Petsumer Report tells you –
plus a great deal more.

In Less than Five Minutes from now You can be inside the pages of Petsumer Report Online
and see for yourself!

Pet Owners worldwide are aware what happened when tainted Chinese imported wheat gluten's were sold to US pet food manufacturers - some estimates feel more than 50,000 dogs and cats became ill, and over 17,000 died. I think every pet owner understands the risks of imported ingredients and understands the need to know if their pet's food contains them.

I doubt any pet owner would intentionally feed their pet discarded meats left over from the processing of human foods. But unless you KNOW if your pet's food is made from human grade ingredients - that's exactly what you might be doing (Click here to read about human grade and pet grade ingredients). Or I doubt many pet owners would intentionally feed their dog or cat a food that is stale or old (Click here to read about 'Best By' date on pet foods) - but unless you know the manufacturers shelf life, you might be doing that right now.

"The most detailed pet food comparison
available anywhere."

"I'm a new subscriber to your Petsumer Report and would like to first thank you for the work you're doing. I've been wanting to feed my dog a healthier diet for months, but kept reading conflicting and confusing advice. Your report gives me an easy-to-use, reliable resource. Thanks again for all your work. Sincerely,
Patti K. Kingston, WA"

Because of the existing laws governing pet food - you can walk into any pet store and see hundreds of dog foods and cat foods whose labels pretty much all look the same...'Premium' - 'Choice' - 'Natural'. Some of the foods ARE premium or natural - while many others with the same 'premium' or 'natural' statements on the label contain NO meat, Risky Chemicals, Dyes, and other highly inferior ingredients.

Learn which pet foods are telling you the truth - and which pet foods are taking full advantage of moderate pet food labeling laws. Subscribe to Petsumer Report.

Look ...Petsumer Report™ provides subscribers with:

paw print US only or imported ingredients.
paw print Human grade or pet grade ingredients.
paw print Shelf life.
paw print Notice of Red Flag ingredients (potentially dangerous).
paw print Natural preservatives or potentially dangerous chemical preservatives.
paw print Health promoting ingredients.
paw print Rating per AAFCO ingredient definitions (one to five Paw Prints).
paw print Easy comparisons of over 600 pet foods/treats (40+ new products added monthly).
paw print 24/7 access to reviews.

The above is NOT proprietary information. Most of it is available to you by calling each pet food manufacturer and asking a few questions. Knowledge of the 'red flag' ingredients, natural or chemical preservatives, and health promoting ingredients comes from reading the AAFCO definitions of pet food ingredients and some research materials. The Paws Club section of this web site provides you with a wealth of information for you to do the proper research of your pet's food. Petsumer Report Online simply puts all of the information that SHOULD be on the label - in one place and does all the time consuming work for you. Plus...

For each dog food and cat food review (almost 700!)…

  1. Separate List of quality animal proteins.  Some foods provide zero – some foods provide six or better!
  2. Separate List of health promoting ingredients.  Flax seed, alfalfa, and grape seed extract are known health promoting ingredients. Some foods have none of these – others have all three.
  3. Special Note if pet food contains controversial ingredients.  Garlic and Menadione Sodium Bisulfite Complex are both controversial pet food ingredients.  Some foods stay clear of the controversy – some don’t.
  4. Special Note if pet food contains by-products, chemical preservatives, and animal fat (ingredient determined by the FDA to be most likely to contain euthanized animals).
  5. Special Note if pet food contains chelated or proteinated minerals (for best mineral absorption).
  6. Special Note if pet food contains probiotics (friendly bacteria that benefits the intestinal system and in turn the immune system of the pet).

For a limited time...
A full one year subscription of Petsumer Report Online will cost you less than $1.50 per month. By the time your year subscription expires there will be well over 1000 reviews of dog foods, cat foods, dog and cat treats, and soon pet toys and other pet supplies.

The report also proves a savings of almost $50.00 a year for a cat owner feeding a high end, high quality canned cat food as compared to a popular discount brand of cat food. "The petsumer report should be read by everyone who has a pet and loves it and know the value of their unconditional love and understands the irreplaceable kindship to our own natural human life that our animals are and represent.

Since writing Truth About Pet Food (currently not available - writing second edition) and talking with pet owners (worldwide!) through speaking, email, and appearing on radio interviews all across the US and Canada - I heard the same questions from thousands of pet owners...

"Is this food safe?"
"Does __________ cat food contain any of the dangerous ingredients?"
"Does ________ dog food contain Chinese ingredients?"

It never was - and still isn't - my intention to bad mouth any one particular pet food manufacturer nor endorse any one particular pet food - my intentions were/are to provide pet owners with the 'truth' and let them make decisions on their own. I thought Truth About Pet Food would provide that - but it ended up not being enough. From the countless questions I have been asked from pet owners in the US, Canada, Europe, Philippines, Australia, New Zealand, and the UAE (as of this writing) - I learned that pet owners want specifics about their brand of pet food. They want to know if the food or treat has "good" or "bad" ingredients. They want to know if any ingredients come from China. They want to know if any potentially dangerous ingredients such as By-Products and Chemical Preservatives are in their pet's food. Petsumer Report™ became the answer to the questions.

Here is the 'truth' about pet foods...

Pet Food and Treat ingredients come from two VERY different categories or classifications...Pet grade/quality ingredients or Human grade/quality ingredients

Do you know which your pet is eating?

Pet foods and Treats can legally contain chemical preservatives linked to cancer and tumors.

Do you know if they are in your
pet's food or treats?

Many pet food manufacturers purchase pet food ingredients outside the US - countries with little to no government regulations or quality control.

Do you know if any ingredient in your
pet's food
comes from outside the US?

Petsumer Report Does

"Susan, I just wanted to let you know that I find Petsumer Report Online to be very easy to use. It is easy to move from subject to subject, I never get lost. It is very helpful being online, versus hard copy because I sometimes remember something I want to review from previous newsletters/reports and cannot seem to find my hard copy, but quickly can find Online and even print if I need to.

I thank you so much for all that you do to help educate the public to help our furry friends. Thank you"

Sonja

Just because a dog food or cat food contains chemical preservatives or ingredients made in China doesn't necessarily mean that your dog or cat will become ill or die - but you do deserve to KNOW. Every pet owner deserves to know if a pet food ingredient is a lessor quality or if a pet food ingredient comes from outside the US. The pet food recall that began in March 2007 cost many pets their lives - no one even considered the possibility that a wheat gluten or rice gluten from China would kill their pet. No one knew that some pet food ingredients came from outside the US. Country of origin of ingredients and the quality/grade of ingredients should be listed on the label - but it's not.

The laws of the pet food and pet treat industry clearly state that a pet product manufacturer CAN NOT provide any information on the packaging or advertising as to the quality or grade of ingredients. In other words, you cannot tell by the packaging nor the advertising of the pet food if it is made from quality human grade ingredients or a far lessor quality pet grade ingredients. This law benefits the manufacturers that use inferior ingredients, and the law hinders the manufacturers that use quality ingredients. All dog foods and cat foods must look the same and appear the 'same'. Same ingredient names, same 100% Balanced, same everything - that is until you know the differences.

Pet Grade or Pet Quality Ingredients - needless to say, are NOT the same as human grade or quality ingredients. The rules of the pet food industry puts it this way..."Shall be suitable for use in animal food." Here is one of their secrets...'suitable for use in animal food' means the ingredient can be rejected for use in human food for any reason including (but not limited to) disease and drugs. Many ingredients that are deemed 'suitable for use in animal food' are considered unsafe for use in cattle, hog, or sheep feed for fear of future risk to humans with such diseases as Mad Cow. But these very same ingredients are rated as pet grade or pet quality - 'suitable for use in pet food.' And are used in many of the most popular pet foods and pet treats.

They don't have to tell you -
the 'good guys' can't tell you -
BUT Petsumer Report Can!

Do you think that you would have EVER learned that some pet food manufacturers purchase cheap inferior unregulated ingredients from outside the US?

Do you think ANYONE is going to tell you the next time they decide to use a cheap Supplier from outside the US?

"What a wonderful source of just the type information I've been looking for!
Your publication fills a great need for dog (and cat) lovers who treat their pets as part of the family."

Ken W.

In 2006 over $26 Billion dollars was spent on pet food and pet supplies in the US.  Yet that $26 Billion dollar industry is pretty much completely self-regulated.  THEY decide what’s legal, THEY decide what information will be put on the product label, THEY decide what the public will be told about the product.

This isn’t a new problem – it’s been going on for years.

Over 15 years ago I lost an 8 year old dog to bone cancer.  My Veterinarian told me most likely her cancer was due to the chemical preservatives in her food.  The preservative – Ethoxyquin - IS STILL COMMONLY USED IN PET FOODS AND PET TREATS TODAY.  I was so heartbroken that my beloved dog had to die because of chemicals added to her food that I gave her.  Ever since, I have been on a campaign to learn as much as I possibly can about the quality and safety of pet products and share that word with as many people as I can.

The Pet Industry is expected to exceed
$40 Billion Dollars in 2007.

Over $575 Million Dollars was spent on
ADVERTISING pet products last year in the
U.S. alone.

Yet...

NO ONE tells you if ingredients are manufactured/purchased in the US or imported...

NO ONE tells you if the pet food or treat
is made from
human grade/quality ingredients...

No One but Petsumer Report

"Thank you for creating the Petsumer report. I rely on the information you provide. As I have previously mentioned I am now fostering a dog, one who is a very picky eater. When I began the process of deciding what food to give her, I poured over all your evaluations before choosing a brand. The information you provide is not available anywhere else! Your information has opened my eyes to what is really in pet food and pet treats. Until I read your information I thought XXX chews and XXX were great...now I know better. Anyone who wants to really understand the value of the ingredients in their chosen pet food should subscribe to the Petsumer Report.

I have attached a picture of April Mae, my foster baby and soon to become my adopted baby!"

Petsumer Report is the very first online and in print pet owner publication that gives you the vital information about your pet products - BEFORE you put your pet at risk. Interestingly enough - several pet food manufacturers subscribe to Petsumer Report. Subscribers also include veterinarians, marketing firms representing pet food lines, and many independent pet businesses.

Product Reviews provide you with this...

  • Human Grade or Quality ingredients or Pet Quality/Grade ingredients.
  • US only ingredients or if ingredients are purchased or manufactured outside the US.
  • Red Flag ingredients or no Red Flag ingredients.
  • Shelf Life (understanding to how fresh the food or treat is).
  • Use of Natural Preservatives or Chemical Preservatives.
  • Added health benefits (or lack of) - such as chelated minerals and probiotics.

As explained above, the differences between Human Grade and Pet Grade ingredients is vast. In my opinion our pets deserve to be fed food and treats that contain strictly human grade ingredients. Anything less I consider to be an inferior product.

As the world has recently learned, ingredients purchased outside the US can be deadly. I would ONLY feed my pets a food or treat that contained US ingredients only. It's just not worth the risk.

Red Flag ingredients have the potential to cause our pets illness and early death. Including ingredients such as 'Meat and Bone Meal' that contain euthanized animals AND the drug used to euthanize the animal. In other words, some pet foods and treats contain the drug Pentobarbital - the drug used to euthanize cattle, horses, and dogs and cats because...the food or treat itself contains euthanized animals.

Shelf Life is vitally important when selecting a naturally preserved pet food and treat (naturally preserved is the best!). Naturally preserved products lose their nutritional value over time. Thus, the fresher the food or treat - the better. Pet products ONLY state the date of expiration. They do not tell Petsumers when the product was made - thus how fresh the product is. To provide your dog or cat with the absolute best nutrition the product MUST be fresh.

Common Chemical Preservatives allowed in pet food are linked to tumors and cancer. Petsumer deserve to know if those chemicals are in their pet's food or treats.

Some pet product manufacturers provide our pets with added health benefits. One of the necessary requirements of a complete diet (human and pet!) are minerals. However in their natural state, minerals are difficult for the body to absorb. Modern science has provided us with tools to introduce minerals in a fashion the body can absorb or utilize them easier. Another health benefit that some pet product manufacturers provide our pets are probiotics - also known as 'friendly bacteria'. Since the majority of the immune system (pets and people) is located in the intestinal system - keeping things in good working order benefits the health of the animal. Friendly bacteria does just that. These added health benefits are not required to be placed in pet foods - but they are provided by some manufacturers as an added bonus.

Below is a sample of what Petsumer Report™ Online gives you on over 550 dog foods, cat foods, and dog and cat treats (as of 4/1/08 - 40+ new reviews added each month)...

Plus:

Minus: The XYZ Pet Food Representative I spoke with told me ingredients are pet quality/grade not human quality/grade. The mineral listings do not read to be chelated or proteinated (for better mineral absorption). This food does not appear to contain probiotics (friendly bacteria that benefits the intestinal system and in turn the immune system of the pet). Contains by-products. Contains Animal Fat – ingredient determined by the FDA to be most likely to contain euthanized animals. This pet food contains Menadione Sodium Bisulfite Complex (source of Vitamin K activity) which is a controversial synthetic Vitamin K. Contains chemical preservatives.

Who am I and why should you listen to me?

My name is Susan Thixton - not to sound like I am bragging, but I am Internationally recognized as the pet food expert helping pet owners understand how to find the safest and healthiest dog and cat foods and treats. She's been called courageous, perseverant, even a "pet lovers Savior" for her 16 year study of pet food.

I have written hundreds of pet industry articles and the 2006 released book Truth About Pet Food (currently being updated for a second edition). I am a frequent speaker and radio guest all over the U.S. and Canada with more than 70 appearances in the last 2 years.

For the past 20+ years, I've been teaching Petsumers how to keep their pet safe, healthy, and happy. Back in 1986 I designed and opened the very first all indoor/all suite boarding kennel in the United States. In 1997, I produced an award winning dog training video that sold all across the US and Canada.

These are just a few of the thousands of emails I've received
since the current recall...

"I'm so glad to have a pet food that isn't all corn and wheat gluten, and has no by-products."

"Our kittens are on Science Diet Kitten, which I am not thrilled with their ingredients at all.  The kittens are beautiful, shiny coats, clear eyes and look healthy, but they have some ingredients that I'm not happy with after purchasing your e-book and also doing a lot of my own online research. It is such a hard choice."

"I appreciate your knowledge and understanding all the facts."

"I listen to  the Allen Handleman show when you are a guest and appreciate you so much.  I have learned  much about dog food-Thanks again for all your hard work."

"Thanks again for staying on top of things."

"Thank you for publishing the article informing us pet lovers of the dangers of junk pet foods."

"Heard you on Alan Handleman on FMTalk101.1 last week.  I am extremely thankful that you have taken on this massive project to protect our pets."

"That makes me feel so good.  Thank you for taking the time to respond and for all of your hard work."

"Thanks for your time!  I appreciate any help and also your efforts, in general, to expose the dog food companies for their failure to produce a good product in the name of increasing profit margins."

"Thanks very much.  I am looking forward to having my pets around for a long, long time."

"Could this have been caused by the horrible things in dog food?!!!     Can effects of these kinds of diseases be slowed or reversed with better nutrition?   Thank you for researching and sharing this important information.   I had no idea!"

"I would love your opinion as I respect your work and the information you're trying to get out there for all of us who are searching."

"sorry to bother you..I don't care much about what I eat, but she has no choice but to eat what I feed her and I don't want to POISON her anymore with these foods."

"I appreciate your honesty and your feedback.  Thanks so much for your response."

All Petsumers deserve to know if a food, treat, toy, chew, or any other pet product contain ingredients that could possibly harm their pet. And now they can.
