"The following recall has been announced:
Merrick Pet Care Inc. is recalling one lot of 10-ounce bags of Beef Filet Squares for Dogs because the dog treats could be contaminated with salmonella. Salmonella can affect animals, and people who handle contaminated pet food can become infected with salmonella, especially if they haven't thoroughly washed their hands. No illnesses have been reported in people or pets, according to the Amarillo, Texas, company. The recalled Beef Filet Squares were shipped to distributors and retailers throughout the U.S. The treats were sold in 10-ounce plastic bags marked with the best by date of March 24, 2012, and the lot number 10084TL7. For more information, consumers can call 800-664-7387."
This is a different 'Best By' date of Merrick Beef Filet Squares that were previously recalled in January 2010.

I'm pretty curious about how they alerted distributors and retailers. We sell Merrick treats in our store, but not that particular one. I don't believe that we received any notices, as I'm sure I would have taken note of that. I'll be looking into that soon. Seems pretty specific to be left out of that alert, unless our distoributor did a search of who has purchased that particular product and sent alerts out to that store, but it seems unlikely.
How disappointing, I always thought of Merrick's as one of the better quality mfg's. Unless I'm going blind, there's not even a mention of this recall on their website, even under "FAQ's".
TWO recalls in six months for the SAME ITEM-what's going on there?
I would just like to add that these kinds of treats are not hard to make on your own. Small home dehydrators are not costly, or you can use the lowest temp on your oven. Get your treats set up for the year during the winter time so you don't heat the house more in the summer.
I use my dehydrator all year to dehydrate chicken feet and chicken heads, and organ meat. You can freeze it if you are worried about how much moisture you might have left in the food you are working with. When you bring it out of the freezer, pop it in the dehydrator or oven for a few hours to get rid of remaining moisture. I am a trainer so I go through a lot of treats, but still want to only feed a quality treat. So I have located grass fed beef, goat and sheep, and naturally fed-really free range chicken, farmers who sell me all their organ meat fairly cheap.
It is not as hard for me to locate such farmers, because I live in a nicely diverse area that has small farmers, and a community that likes to support those farmers by buying their quality products, but big city dwelers may have to look way outside the city, or find and purchase these products from online.
I use their meats to feed my dogs and for treats to train my dogs and other dogs. The bottom line is you will know exactly where the treats came from, and how it was cooked and stored You can also make some of your own chews like this if you have smaller dogs. Larger more agressive chewers are harder, because you need larger portions. Kim Willis at www.kustomk9training.com
I am with Christine on this one. I never received a notification from my supplier either. But then again i don't sell the beef treats at my store. Still, can't imagine that they go by what one orders. Scary...
I work with Merrick Pet Care and wanted to provide an update on the recall. 72% of the highlighted lot has been reclaimed. They are continuing to work with their retail and distributor partners to get back the rest. Merrick contacted the retailers and distributors who had received the highlighted lot. Merrick appreciates the help of the blogging community in getting the word out.
