Chinese Study on Long Term Effects of Melamine
- 3-4-2010
- Categorized in: Pet Food Ingredients

Not that they told us much, but the Chinese have released some information on the long term effects of melamine in children who consumed tainted formula.
The research from Peking University reported a mere 12% of the children tested “showed kidney abnormalities six months later”. Further “Our results suggest a need for further follow-up of affected children to evaluate the possible long-term impact on health, including renal function.”

I suggest those from Peking University come to the U.S. and study the 3 years of medical treatments of pets that continue to be ravaged by the effects of melamine. Perhaps the AVMA would be so kind to work with Peking University on this effort.
The above article also states: “Despite tightened regulations and increased inspections on producers, melamine-tainted milk products have recently shown up repackaged in several places around the country, exposing weaknesses in China's promises to better police the food chain.”
Doesn’t leave me feeling very comfortable.
Know the country of origin of every single ingredient in your pet’s food and treats. Know their eating and elimination habits; any variation from the norm could be an early warning sign that needs to be addressed with your veterinarian.

This doesn't surprise me one bit, they're doing just about as good as our FDA does; poison kids and pets, get caught, promise it'll never happen again, it does, nothing happens, repeat cycle....
At least they've done a study, where's ours?
Agree with KathCA---where indeed IS our study?
