Don’t Give Your Pet a Child’s Toy

It happens everyday with little thought that a child’s toy wouldn’t e safe enough for a pet.  But they are not.  Don’t risk your pet’s life.

A new story of a pet’s death has been shared with me by several concerned pet owners.  Some stuffed children’s toys are being made with ‘gel elastomers’ instead of stuffing.  The gel has been deadly to at least one dog.

Gel Elastomers are used to simulate a flesh like feel to a child’s toy.  While available information states the gel is non-toxic to children, children don’t eat the toy as a dog would.  Dogs can chew these toys and large pieces can obstruct the intestines; the result can be deadly.

Only purchase toys that are specifically designed for your dog or cat.  With dogs, make sure and purchase size appropriate; don’t give a large dog a small toy.  Always supervise your pet with a toy.  I know, it sounds like a burden, but not nearly as burdensome as a trip to the vet.  Toss any toy that they tear apart; toss any bone before it becomes small enough to swallow.  Pork hide bones are easier to digest (thus safer) than rawhide bones.  Place all toys that have the slightest possibility of destruction out of reach when the pet is not supervised.

Wishing you and your pet(s) the best,

Susan Thixton

My dog has such allergies to pork hide now that the only thing I can find for him to chew (he is a powerful chewer) are Himalyan Chews.  I don't know if those have been vetted by you yet, Susan, but so far they have proved hypoallergenic and great for his little, but powerful jaws.
