EPA to investigate Pet Flea and Tick Treatments

The Environmental Protection Agency is reporting they will increase evaluation of spot-on flea and tick control products for pets.

“Incidents with flea and tick products can involve the use of spot-on treatments, sprays, collars and shampoos. However, the majority of the potential incidents reported to EPA are related to flea and tick treatments with EPA-registered spot-on products. Spot-on products are generally sold in tubes or vials and are applied to one or more localized areas on the body of the pet, such as in between the shoulders or in a stripe along the back.”

“Adverse reactions reported from the spot-on products range from mild effects such as skin irritation to more serious effects such as seizures and in some cases death. Over 44,000 potential incidents associated with registered spot-on products were reported to EPA in 2008. Pesticide registrants are required by law to submit information to EPA on adverse effects resulting from the use of any registered pesticide.”

According to the EPA the following pet flea treatment products represent about 80% of the reported adverse reactions.

Is an evaluation from the EPA going to be better than one from the FDA?
If I had outdoor pets, I'd use Bio-Spot again from Drs. Foster & Smith.

Thank you for this much needed information.
So many pet owners use these products , many vet recommended, and they are killing our pets. They should be used with caution, and only in case of emergency. Just my opinion.

Thank you again , Susan.

I wish I had read this article before applying the Sergeant's Silver flea & tick (for small dogs) before using it on my sweet Pug. An hour after applying she acted crazy, running around, scratching, whining. Tonight at 1:30am I had to give her 2 baths back to back to get the oils off best I could. Her skin is so red and she's miserable, so sad. I'm afraid I'll have to take her to the vet in the morning. Why do they sell these products if they KNOW it's going to cause harm? Shameful! I hope my 6 mo. pup will be ok. Never will I use this, or any of their cheap versions of flea control! I might write a letter to the company pending the outcome, or might just do it anyway knowing what's already happened! Sad that she's in pain.

Our bichon/poodle who is 6 months old responded the same way to the Sergeant's Silver flea & tick. We applied the correct dose and applied it the correct way. We ended up at the animal emergency hospital. He is still on medication because he ended up with a staph infection from the sores he got from this treatment. Within an hour of application, he was in such pain and his skin was BRIGHT pink. He is a white dog so it is easy to see. He developed sores and it has been 4 weeks and he is still itching. This product needs to be discontinued.

My yorkies have always been allergic to any of the treatments my vet insist on. One of the things I ignore from her. One of my dogs got so sick I thought he was having bowel and kidney failure plus he got hives. Get rid of the stuff

I wish I had known had toxic the Sargent's Silver for Dogs was. We used it on our 2 pugs and minature daschund. Within minutes we had to give them 2 baths, and then the vet told us to use Dawn to get it off of their skin. Somehow our beautiful little kitty came in to contact with it. Within hours she was having severe seizures, we rushed her to the vet, with in less than 48 hours she passed away. Our family is heart broken that this beautiful, healthy, loved family member was taken from us in such a horrible, painful and violent way. This stuff is so toxic, it should NOT be allowed to be on the market.

Cathy,

I am sorry for your loss. It is too bad that over a year later, the warnings are not out about this stuff and animals are still be exposed and suffering. My cat is at the vet's right now and we don't know if she is going to make it.

I have used Triforce on my miniature schnauzers. I male had a severe reaction almost like being poisoned. He began vomitting, shaking violently and had loss of balance to the point he couldn't walk without falling over. I called the vet and immediately gave him a bath. They advised me that h may be allergic to the flea treatment. I made the mistake of using the treatment again on another dog and she had severe respiratory problems. This medication should be taken off the market. What is the fda waiting on or is this a plot to rise vet bills and reduce the pet population. I think that it is cruel that this product should be allowed on the market for a company to make big profits off of at the expense of our beloved family members

Hello....I'm very upset with the makers of this product....I used the Triforce Canine Squeeze and I thought my babies were going to DIE!...I pompoo...she was foaming at the mouth and drooling and just limp and my pug ...he was running around in circles..bitting and clawing and his body to the point he was drawing blood...I didn't know what to do so I did try washing it off...I was up the entire night praying that God spares their life!....WHY would a company prduce such a product....my pets are my children...I would love for their behine to endure what they did that night!..If I was able I would do whatever I could to make certain this does NOT HAPPEN TO ANOTHER PET!...This company should be CLOSED DOWN!!!!!!!

One of the simplest ways to determine a flea drawback is to examine your pets stomach area and along the inside of the back legs. The hair is thinner in this area and easier to identify fleas. You can get rid of fleas by applying borax to your pet. It's really effective and i tried it myself.
