Fish Tossing at AVMA Convention

Yes, you read that correctly; The American Veterinary Medical Association's annual convention to be held July 11-14 in Seattle, will include a fish-throwing demonstration.

I had to shake my head in puzzlement when I read about the scheduled Opening Session for the AVMA Convention next month.  "Saturday 7:00 am  can open the way to a better working environment through teamwork. Because actions speak louder than words, Pike Place Fish Market owner John Yokoyama and his staff deliver their Fish Wisdom in a way that is fun, educational and inspiring."  http://avmaconvention.org/default.asp?alt=URL2&body=/_event1/EventsActivities.asp&nav=/leftnav/navEventsActivities.asp

This teamwork exercise...will be a fish tossing exercise.  Dead fish, tossed from one veterinarian to another, at seven o'clock in the morning.  Sounds like fun doesn't it?

Then, I learned that PETA will be protesting the AVMA convention because of the fish toss.  Stupid activity perhaps, even more stupid for Veterinarians to be tossing around dead fish, but protest worthy?  I've got better things to do with my time.  PETA have dubbed the dead fish "sea kittens" hoping to make an analogy that veterinarians wouldn't toss dead kittens so why toss dead fish.  http://blog.peta.org/archives/foie_gras/

Seattle Times Mark Rahner took a look into the controversy, below is his humerous take on the story...

As for a teamwork exercise for veterinarians attending the AVMA convention, I propose them work on a database system to keep track of all possible pet food related illnesses and deaths.  Toss that around Doctors; do something worthwhile with your time.

Wishing you and your pet(s) the best,

Susan Thixton

Well, first off, I don't eat fish and never will. Secondly, PETA kills most of the dogs and cats they rescue so their credibility is zero with me.

Perhaps what I understand least of all is that there are many hungry people in this country who do eat fish. This first grade level game will do absolutely nothing to aleviate this problem. It will only waste a bunch of what many people consider to be FOOD. They should throw paper mache fish at each other, and donate all the fish they have no doubt already purchased to the nearest 10 homeless shelters, and then procede to get lives!

This is really stupid but PETA, as usual, has outdone themselves again. PETA used to be such a wonderful group of caring people, now they are just a laughingstock. There are so many more pressing issues but I guess they never heard of the old adage, 'pick your fights wisely'.

My mother always taught me not to play with our food. We are to respect it, not play games with it." It just goes to show you how these people, veteniarians incuded, think of animals...dead or alive.

I think most people and Veterinarians have better ways to spend their time. How about instead of spending time tossing dead fish which is disgusting, take that time and spay animals free of charge for people who can't afford it, donate their time and services for something worthwhile. I agree, give the dead fish to homeless shelters. The mere thought of tossing any dead animal is disgusting.

Next we'll walk into the veterinary clinic and see one of these stuffed poodle ashtrays brought home as a convention souvenir:

It's disrespectful, consult your local Indian tribe.
