In Search of Safe Flea and Tick Treatments

A recent discovery of fleas on my pets sent me searching for safe treatments.  What I discovered are several believed to be quality resources for pet owners.

HartzVictims.org is a flea treatment eye opener.  The site is full of horror stories from pet owners that have used a Hartz Mountain flea product with disastrous results.  The first post on the site (dated 2/24/10) tells a story of one pet owners fight and win against a pet product giant.

From HartzVictims.org “In a wonderful and significant victory for pet owners and consumers–including animal advocates, courageous veterinarians, vet technicians and everyone concerned with adverse health affects of pesticide products–Hartz Mountain Corporation was defeated in a jury trial on January 12th in Austin, Texas.  Mr. Frank Bowers, of Austin, sought justice and pursued his legal rights after losing his Olde English Bulldog to Hartz’s flea and tick product “Hartz Ultra Guard Pro” in August of 2007.  The trial, case number 015246, was held in Travis County, Precinct 3, presided by Judge Susan Steeg and heard by a jury panel of six.  The jury deliberated only 20 minutes and returned the verdict in favor of Mr. Bowers.”  http://www.hartzvictims.org/

Mr. Bowers bravely represented himself in small claims court.  Kudos to him for taking on one of the big guns; kudos to the jury for seeing the truth.

GreenPaws.org offers pet owners resources to find true safe flea and tick products.  Plus they are backed by Natural Resources Defense Council (http://www.nrdc.org/).  The home page of the site, www.greenpaws.org, has a link for “Updated Product Guide”.  Every pet owner using flea treatments should scan this page; valuable information.

The following video is provided on the site.

As for us, we are relying on a peppermint oil natural product and a good ol’ flea comb to stop the invasion of fleas.

Wishing you and your pet(s) the best,

Susan Thixton

You can't go wrong w/Diatomaceous Earth (DE).  I pay $5.50 for a 2 lb. sack thru www.herbalhealer.com According to a National geographic report, "Death comes w/i 12 hrs. of insects venturing into D.E."

D.E. is mined from fossilized deposits of shells formed by tiny diatoms.  It is a safe & effective remedy for fleas and ticks.  It can be eated by livestock cause it provides trace minerals.  You can spray it on roses, add it to animal feed, sprinkle it on any pet to remove fleas, etc. because no harm will come to them when they groom themselves (or each other.)

I've been using it for about 2 yrs. now & know it works.

DE may also have the added benefit of taking care of any worms, if the dog/cat ingests it!
I love the stuff...

Hi - just a follow up to her comment - make sure you're buying "food grade" diatomaceous earth, and not the kind in the garden store. Food grade can be safely consumed

I use garlic to repel fleas and ticks. I'm also looking into NEEM because the garlic doesn't work 100% when it's bad deer tick season here. I've heard sandalwood essential oil (ALWAYS DILUTE essential oils!!!) has insect repelling properties too. Those with allergies or asthma may not like DE it can irritate the lungs, but it works excellent sprinkled in the yard.

Barb, essential oils should be used very cautiously on cats. Many safe for dogs are deadly for cats.

We use Brewers Yeast and garlic pills and when that is not 100% we use Best Yet. It is a cedar oil spray that kills fleas and ticks instantly. It is chemical free. It works on mites, lice, bed bugs, roaches, ants and other bugs. It also helps promote healing of any sore or dry flaky spots. The cedar oil softens their skin up.  You can even spray it around the house or even on yourself. If you don't mind the cedar oil smell, it's great stuff.

I'm not trying to tell you what to do, but please be careful w/raw garlic.  I put it in my cats food years ago and he had seizures (my vet comfirmed that it was the added garlic that caused them.)  I'd never use it again in any form.
