Pet Food needs a Sourcemap
- 7-7-2010
- Categorized in: Pet Food Ingredients

Wouldn't it be wonderful to visit a pet food company website and quickly see the country of origin of each and every ingredient in the pet products? A new volunteer run website is doing just that with many consumer products. No pet food is listed yet, but here's hoping they take note of this vital consumer (petsumer) information.
The Sourcemap.org website states "It can be almost impossible to know with certainty where something comes from—that is why we’re building Sourcemap. Until producers care about the sources of materials, consumers will be uninformed."
Uninformed petsumers is of huge concern. Uninformed petsumers was the foundation of the deadly 2007 pet food recall; no one had a clue that one pet food manufacturer (Menu Foods) made hundreds of different varieties of pet foods for dozens of different companies and ingredients were sourced from China. Until pet food companies care about the sources of ingredients...care enough to share country of origin information with customers...pet owners will remain uninformed and at risk.
Below is a Sourcemap of an Ipod.
The Flash Memory was made in South Korea, HDD input - Japan, Computer Chips - Taiwan, Apple managers - Singapore, PCB assembly - China, Apple Engineers from California. Wishing you and your pet(s) the best, Susan Thixton Are you subscribed to Truth About Pet Food Newsletter?
With many pet foods having over 90 different ingredients, their source map could be very detailed. But...certainly to be of great interest to the pet owner.
Who is going to be the first pet food to provide us with a Sourcemap? It'll be interesting to see.

Wouldn't it be amazing if this applied to food we eat as well. AND I'd like to know what all the ingredients are ... many are not listed on ingredient panels because they are added at the source and not something that the manufacturer adds. This is true of pet food and human food across the board -- the one exception that I know of is that preservatives in fat in pet food must be identified.
We hope to find our ingredients here and be the first pet food company complying to the transparency we welcome. We know our human grade sources, but I could use this tool to help me find ingredients I know are reliable in the future and keep an eye on what we use now as companies change policy and procedure. This could be an excellent tool for consumers to understand the difference between the big company products and small producers trying to create real food for pets. I hope they succeed in getting products on here so this can easily be created and managed. They have very little on there so far but what a fantastic idea.
We love the potential for this!
What a great idea but I'm wondering how companies would respond to the request to comply. With their legal clout, the FDA should be demanding this, they just take a backseat and let others try to help us.
