I was of the understanding that there is no such thing as a presciption diet pet food. That it is a marketing ploy. Says only sold in vet clinics by prescription. So the prescription is coming from the vet who works in the vet clinic. Hmm, maybe I am missing something. Perhaps someone can enlighten me.
With all due respect, Susan -- Maureen Tate, you are correct. Biggest scam ever perpetrated, as cats are the strictest of all carnivorous mammals which do not even have teeth which can grind anything, let alone carbohydrate-junk filler cereal kibbles with no moisture, as cats require!
Cats' jaws do not even rotate!!
See this Harvard Law Paper for starters-- explains everything thoroughly: http://leda.law.harvard.edu/leda/data/784/Patrick0...
But for those who may be pressed for time, and do not wish to read this very detailed Harvard Law Paper, just look at a cat -- the teeth; the fact that they can/do not chew (they shear and tear that which they are supposed to be eating); and just how common cats vomiting is. Pretty logical when you think about it.
How these "veterinarians" have gotten away with having this conflict of interest is beyond me.
When there is proof that a cat is not an obligate carnivore, I may just trust the mainstream vet profession again. (There are some exceptions out there if one searches.)
Opps forgot to give one (great) exception -- www.catinfo.org.
Dr. Lisa Pierson is just one wonderful veterinarian/feline specialist with all the basic cat facts on her website: www.catinfo.org.
Holistic veterinarians will also guide pet owners appropriately as they tend not to be in the pockets of Big Pet Food.
Prescription diets have particular formulations that address the need of an illness. It varies for what they are formulated for (what particular ailment/illness).
One of the reasons so many people were upset to hear that P&G purchased Natura, a former trusted pet food supplier. Question: how many pet food recalls did Natura ever have? Answer: I believe ZERO
2 problems w/this press release (in addition to the reason for it in the 1st place!). The recommendation is to discard it. How, then, would one prove he had purchased it if it is in the local dump? That stuff is immorally expensive. If I had been stupid enough in the 1st place to give that swill to my pet, I would sure hang on to it to prove my point to get a refund. The 2nd problem I have is every single P&G press release - no matter how disturbing the reason for it - ends with them taking the opportunity to market their crappy products. On the bright side, such a list gives me an opportunity to compare my list of products associated w/P&G so I know what NOT to buy. Believe it or not, one can exist w/out any P&G products. I've been doing it for years. I absolutely will not knowingly purchase a P&G product for myself & certainly not my pets. Am sure I make no difference in their bottom line but it makes me feel better!
Ms. Thixton, as you know, I work in Consumer Relations at Iams. Thank you for paying attention to the news and getting the word out about our recall of Iams Veterinary Formulas Feline Renal. While we knew that issuing a recall over the weekend would be complex, the FDA dictated the timing. We have been a little challenged to get all of our tools and processes in place so that we can notify and sufficiently answer pet parents.
Yesterday (Sunday), we sent a public press release out over PRNewswire, and we sent out a blast fax recall notification to all of the clinics that have purchased the Feline Renal diet, so that they can contact their clients. We also notified VIN (the Veterinary Information Network) and the AVMA. Today (Monday), our phone center is taking calls and notice is going up on our web sites.
This all happened very quickly. We would have preferred to have all of our ducks in a row, but instead we are playing catch up. If anyone has questions or concerns about this recall, please give us a call at 877-894-4458 or email us from the Iams.com site.
Bev,
Since Iams has so very many of these little problems, so often and has killed so many beloved pets (and STILL not paid the vet bills from thousands of pets killed by Iams products in 2007!!!) here is a hint, to get your ducks in a row for the next time,
TUNE UP YOUR LAUGHABLY NON EXISTANT but highly advertised quality control, Iams sucketh greatly in that department. And IAMS sucketh often, you SHOULD have been prepared. How many sick and dead pets is it gonna take?
Next, I see way too many advertisements for Iams to believe a word you say, Bev, about how hard it is to get the word out. Either spend some of those advertsing dollars on getting the news about recalls on TV , use the vast money, earned from pet owners that Iams treats like dirt, to make media get out the news or please get out of the pet food business.
Selling more shoddy goods to pets who probably got renal disease from being fed kidney killing products really is crossing the line.
Does Iams pay kickbacks to vets, who make tons of money from pets sickened by substandard pet products, like Science Diet does? I know Iams buys endorsements with advertsing money, Iams spends plenty of money and effort when they want to, just not on "quality control".
Expect no pity from me for having to deal with this on the weekend, Bev.
Friday night drop and run press releases and caring for several CRF pets 24 hours a day, for years, and watching them die used up any pity for Iams a long time ago. A lot of people have not had a single weekend off from heartbreaking nursing care for sick pets in YEARS because of Iams products and I will be damned if I care that you had to make some calls on one weekend, because Iams had yet another quality control failure!
You are getting paid.
Say, shills on twitter have been used by pet food companies to market the daylights out of stuff, use those same shills to talk about recalls, get the word out!
Odd, isn't it, how the Iams marketing department didn't think of that? Nah, Bev, I gotta say that Iams is not even pretending to get their ducks in a row.
Wow. At least Iams is putting out a statement and not ignoring the situation.
Iams ignored the recall on their website and then posted a release with the wrong info! Clueless clowns who sell poison regularly is the NICEST thing I can say about Iams.
Now THIS happy crap about the big bad FDA made them work on a weekend???! Whiskey Tango Foxtrot! As often as Iams sells poison and they are NOT prepared? Nope, not buying that lie.
Iams blew it big time and that post from Bev is already going viral and making pet people furious in a lot of places. People giving IV fluids to pets suffering kidney failure , paying incredible vet bills and the interest on those vet bills for three years, cremation expenses and who have not had an day off from doing this for years now, much less a weekend , people who have suffered the worst a pet owner can suffer because of Iams, they were less than impressed that a highly paid Iams marketing liar got her weekend ruined and tried to use that as an excuse.
No, these folks were not amused.
Tell you what Bev, I double dog dare you to spend a weekend tending to a renal failure pet, a pet who HAS dead kidneys because they ate Iams poison, pay the bills for that pet, clean vomit and urine and watch the suffering and then lets see if you can whine some more about doing, poorly, what you are being(over) paid to do!
The recall expands! In a Friday night press release.

The FDA made me do it.
Bev, THAT is your story?
Are you sure you want to stick with that one?
OK, you are the PR expert.
And doing a crackerjack job of it too!
I can't tell you how many pet owners have been excited about Iams this week, we are telling our friends and everyone we meet all
about Iams. We carry lists of every single product P&G makes, so
we don't miss any when we discuss how P&G touched our lives, put our pets in the grave.
And really, Bev, there is no need for you to fret or worry, day or night, even on weekends and holidays, we are watching, we keep a very close eye on Iams.
We just wish Iams kept as close an eye on quality control.
Well color me shocked!
Bev, and every other customer service rep at Iams is a stone cold liar!
http://www.consumeraffairs.com/pets/iams.html
Pets have been getting sick a whole lot. The sick pets were reported to Iams a whole lot, Iams lied a whole lot.
It really is time to admit that Iams does not seem to _want_ to be in the pet food business. Iams makes garbage on a good day and straight up death on the bad days. Iams is having a lot of bad days.
Pets are suffering, pet people are suffering , heaven knows Bev is suffering from an inability to tell the truth. Ending the suffering for everybody would be best.
Iams, just brick up that festering pit where all this "alleged" pet food is made, slither back to whatever p&g boardroom spat you forth, consider it your gift to the planet.
