Ray of Hope

Ray of Hope; that’s what the Humane Society of Greater Kansas City calls their new program that’s saving lives.

In January 2009 the Humane Soceity of Greater Kansas City (HSGKC) began the Ray of Hope program partnering with the Kansas City Animal Control; their results, in the first four months of the new program, have shown a 93% reduction in the euthanasia rate from last year!

The Ray of Hope program proves team work between animal care organizations saves lives.  The Kansas City Animal Control, unlike typical Animal Control agencies, “now conducts weekend satellite adoption events with the help of Humane Society volunteers.  This has dramatically increased the number of adoptions for their shelter.”

As well, the HSGKC shelter manager and veterinarian goes to Animal Control once a week to select animals that have not already been selected as adoptable; saving another 30-35 animals per week.  These homeless animals are spayed or neutered and if needed local charity ‘The Gabriel Fund’ is used to treat sick animals making them more adoptable.  Furthermore, HSGKC and Kansas City Animal Control staff distribute spay/neuter coupons and education materials to country residents.

Kudos to HSGKC and the Kansas City Animal Control!  Please keep up the fantastic work!  If every city across the US followed your lead, countless thousands of lives could be saved.

I would have liked to know why the animals were originally deemed unadoptable, and what this ray of hope program does to help unadoptable animals, other than treat animals with health problems.

What a great program! Wouldn't it be excellent if more cities followed this example? Currently, my town has a no-kill animal rescue that regularly visits the city Animal Control to help find homes for as many as they are able. Of couse, the greatest way to majorly reduce euthanasia is if cities pass a law to enforce spay/neutering & provide this service low-cost or free of charge.
