Read This Before You Consider Over-the-Counter Flea Treatments

Over-the-counter flea treatments are responsible for at least 1600 pet deaths reported to the EPA over the last five years. The EPA also reports that a risky chemical in these over-the-counter flea treatments accounts for more than half of ‘major’ pesticide pet reactions involving brain damage, heart attacks, and violent seizures.

In a recent report by AlterNet.com, Health and Wellness, Wings, a five year old English Pointer, went from a healthy dog to dying from what is believed a chemical induced starvation. Pyrethroids, chemicals common to over-the-counter flea treatments, are connected to damage to pet brains; specifically, a portion of the brain responsible for hunger and thirst.

Bio-Spot is the flea treatment believed to be responsible for Wings’ death. Similar over-the-counter treatments that are pyrethroid based are made by Hartz, Sergeant’s, Farnam, and Bayer.

This article certainly showcases the pathetic state of affairs at the EPA.
