Regardless to how you feel about Blue Buffalo Pet Food, something amazing happened with the VINNews announcement of dog illness possibly linked to the pet food. Veterinarians, or at the least a veterinarian news service, publically alerted pet owners to concerns of the pet food. Before a recall, before the possibility of hundreds of sick pets. It's rare and VinNews needs to be acknowledged for their bold move.
Naysayers claim VinNews was being an alarmist; others have claimed the worry over this report is a waste of time. Perhaps the naysayers have never had a pet become ill or die from a contaminated or 'problem' batch of pet food. Those that have experienced the life altering events of a sick pet from a pet food/treat, cheered when a veterinary website publically took a stance; warning other veterinarians and pet owners of a possible problem.
The VinNews article stated both sides of the story, providing statements from Blue Buffalo and several veterinarians that believes the food is problematic. No panic, just a warning that this food could be a problem. No advise to run to your pantry and promptly burn all packages of Blue Buffalo; just a warning there have been pets with similar symptoms that all seem to be linked to batch and variety of Blue Buffalo dog food.
I say a big Thank You! This is something that we need to see more of! More Veterinarians giving the pet owning public alerts to a possible problem!
To Veterinary websites, blogs, and forums...please follow the lead of VinNews. In spite of popular belief, pet owners are not going to run rampant in the streets panic stricken at the news there 'might' be a problem with a dog food or cat food. We are actually quite sane. We just want a 'heads up'. Many Pet Owners are a lot smarter about pet food issues than we get credit for. While we don't have DVM behind our name, many of us can quote FDA and AAFCO regulations and ingredient definitions (and brands, and country of origin, and...) faster than we can recall our Social Security Number. We just want to be informed. No panic, no alarmists, just informed.
At the very bottom of the 'Veterinarians report mysterious link between dog food and hypercalcemia' VINNews article is a small link that states "Send us feedback about this article". I've already sent a personal thank you to VINNews. If you appreciated their effort reporting this story, please send them a quick thank you note.
Wishing you and your pet(s) the best, Susan Thixton
