Toxic Levels of Vitamin D found in Nutro Cat Food
- 5-4-2010
- Categorized in: Pet Food News

Don Earl of Pet Food Products Safety Alliance notified me this evening regarding some lab test results his (tremendous) organization received today (May 4, 2010). The lab results found toxic levels of Vitamin D; over 1,000 times recommended by the National Research Council.
“Test results are back on a sample of what is believed to be Nutro Chicken Meal and Rice cat food Lot # 09 01 10 11:03. This is from the same batch of food we tested below on the March 22, 2010 results. The pet owner's cat nearly died after eating the food for 5 days and the symptoms appeared to be consistent with toxic levels of Vitamin D.” Click Here to read the lab results.
Don Earl reported this issue to the FDA hours after receiving the test results; no one (as of this writing) from the FDA has returned his call.

ConsumerAffairs.com has over 500 consumer complaints in the last two years regarding Nutro Pet Foods. Journalist Lisa McCormick confirmed with the FDA that Nutro Pet Food was under investigation (by the FDA) yet no recall has been issued. http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/2009/04/nutro_foia.html
How many pets have to die? How many pets have to become ill before the FDA takes action? The FDA itself has hundreds of reports of sick pets all linked to this pet food company...why has nothing been done to stop the deaths and illnesses?
If you or anyone you know feeds a Nutro Pet Food (dog or cat food) please be very cautious. Please share this pet food warning with other pet owners.
Wishing you and your pet(s) the best,
Susan Thixton

How much in bribes is Nutro paying the FDA? seriously, because Nutro is a 007 company, the FDA has given them a liscense to kill and they sure use it!
The FDA is not even pretending to enforce the rules on so many companies but they are just downright sweet on Nutro, I figure it involves money.
More proof the FDA is a useless, corrupt money-pit. Wonder if Nutro ever heard of 'quality control'?
Where's the big banner on their website about a RECALL?
Wow, is anyone else concerned that the sample was "believed to be" Nutro? Who is this guy? what are his credentials and is his lab and equipment regularly tested and certified for accuracy? If a sample from an open bag was sent for testing how did he know it wasn't contaminated? The reason I ask is I work in the Paving industry and asphalt samples can be processed by two different laboratories and come up with totally different results. Maybe that's why the FDA didn't return his call.
Also, I just realized that Consumer Affairs.com is not THE government Consumer affairs just a web-based firm that has advertisements for several pet foods on it's home page. Hmmm, I wonder if they will post complaints from their sponsoring companies.
Lynn,
You obviously are a newbie to the troubles of those who fight for safe pet food. We - all of us - cannot directly say the name of a pet food because of legal implications. Those that fight for the true safety of pet food do not have an arsenal of lawyers protecting us - we barely have two dimes to rub together. Thus we cannot be direct. What this organization did - was totally in the effort of keeping all pets safe. Nothing more.
As for ConsumerAffairs.com...are you kidding? What newspaper do you pick up that doesn't contain advertising. Do you realize that everyone else - besides yourself - has bills to pay. Do you think that those that work tirelessly to protect us has unlimited funding? Sorry to say, no we don't. Read the 'rest of the story' at ConsumerAffairs.com before you make such comments. They are one of a handful of websites that bother to stand up for all of us.
Lynn,
Don's the "real deal". He works with concerned pet owners and has a process for testing pet food.
There's a reason for the "believed to be . . . " language, and I'm sure that Don will be happy to explain if you will kindly send him an email.
Why don't you spend a bit of time at his site, and try to appreciate what he has done? You'll also see what certified labs perform the testing.
FYI, the FDA is a completely ineffective organization with no ability to prevent problems, or to solve existing ones. Simply put, the FDA couldn't find acetaminophen in a bottle of Tylenol, IMO.
Did you hear about Mr. Madoff and the SEC? The FDA is like that - captives of the industry they were created to regulate.
Have you ever tried to deal with government bureaucrats? Good luck!
No surprise that they don't return Don's call 'cause they don't return mine, either.
I am so sick with concern now as my cat ONLY eats this food and will NOT eat anything else. I need to find out if there is any truth to this study and what it takes for a food to be recalled.
Erika,
Are you kidding me? You are really willing to risk your cat's life to find out?
I would not.
Erika,
Check out PETA's list of animal foods NOT tested on animals.
I never worry when I hear anything about pet food b/c I always feed my animals food from companies who do care. http://search.caringconsumer.com/search_list_icons...
Erica,
Just transitioned to Petcurean, both the adult and kitten formulas. Some of the gang prefer the kitten formula.
Pet Food Companies don't want to recall food, and FDA has no ability to force a recall. All PF recalls are "voluntary".
FDA is aware of the many 100's of complaints about Nutro. Also, they are aware of the complaints shown on Consumer Affairs' site. I know because I called the FDA investigator in New Orleans who "investigated" Nutro.
Also, few veterinarians are well informed about pet food dangers.
IMO, the best leverage we have over Pet Food Companies is to not buy their terrible food, and to warn other pet owners (and your vet) about the dangers of commercial food.
That's why this site and Susan's work is so very important.
Please share this site, Consumer Affairs, and Itchmo (there are others) with your friends.

The transition from EVO to Petcurean took about 10 days.
The smell of a new food is a big deal for my gang, so the first two days, I placed just a few Petcurean kibbles on top of the EVO kibbles.
After they accepted the new smell, I gradually reduced the amount of EVO and increased the amount of Petcurean.
We use mostly homemade wet food, so they didn't go hungry while making the change.
Guess who's on the Roster of the Science Board to the FDA....
