What’s going on with Walmart Special Kitty Cat Food

Not that I would purchase this cat food (never), but warning lights went off when one attentive ‘Truth-er’ alerted me to Walmart’s shelves being empty of Special Kitty dry cat food.
Yes, ok, I admit it. When I hear that a popular pet food is missing from store shelves, the first place my mind goes is Silent Recall. One very attentive and caring pet owner (a ‘Truth-er’) noticed the shelves at Walmart emptied of Special Kitty dry cat food, and she thought the same thing. Even more suspicious was a Urinary Care Special Kitty dry food was still on shelves, but not the Original or Gourmet dry; plus all the moist varieties were still there.
Our attentive pet owner friend (who by the way also doesn’t feed this brand) emailed Walmart and received the following response…

Walmart's goal is to provide consumers with a variety of products to meet their needs and preferences. Many business factors are taken into consideration before discontinuing a product including customer demand. When the level of demand is insufficient to ensure that consumers receive high quality products at an affordable price, the product may be discontinued.
Each comment, concern and suggestion is very important to us because it gives us the opportunity to evaluate the various aspects of our business. Be assured that your comments will be forwarded to the appropriate team where it will be reviewed and carefully considered.

However Jennifer at Walmart Customer Service told me the product is only temporarily out of stock because they are changing manufacturers. She stated the product will return with a new bag soon.
What’s the real story?
Well, I have a hard time believing that Walmart would discontinue a pet food that has to be a high profit margin product for them. It does make sense that Walmart would wish to change manufacturers. Current manufacturer for “some dry foods” Special Kitty is Mars Petcare. Mars Petcare has had a slew of salmonella recalls over the last couple of years including Special Kitty in October 2008. http://www.truthaboutpetfood.com/articles/october-27-mars-petcare-recall-announcement.html
Sadly, Walmart does not provide pet owners with a Special Kitty Cat Food or Ol’ Roy Dog Food website or direct phone number for inquiries like these. Pet owners are left in the dark; questioning what is really going on.
If there is a problem with the food, I am certain we will discover it. If the food is being discontinued, no love loss here. If the cat food is soon to be back on store shelves made by a new manufacturer, I hope they decide to remove the risk ingredients (by-product meal, animal fat, and BHA). Time will tell.

I just burried my daughters cat yesterday. He had been missing for two days. We bought Special Kitty Gourmet at a Walmart in Texas that is in the process of remodeling. It was in the green bag. It took about 5 days for us to realize the cat food was bad and most of the cats were not eating it. When I finally smelled the cat food, it smelled fermented or moldy. One cat was sick, and our in/outdoor cat was missing. We do not know the cause of death, but it seems suspicious.
She started eating on the bag of special kitty on July 5,2011.I
brought it before I went out of town form june 28 to july3. So was had in gone bad then. Are has the special kitty food just now gone bad asof this week. Week of July 25 to Aug1, 2011. As of tonight
Aug.11, 211 I am not feed my cay any mory special kitty food. until I hear from you. And know what is going on I need to know if this will make my cat sick. She has beed potting on the bathroom mat and not in the box.I keep her box changed and washed good.

I ran out of kitty food last wk so u bought a small bag of special kitty gourmet at the feed store! one of my kitties had melamine poisining earlier this yr, well i didnt end up feeding her the special kitty she still had food in her dish n i didnt think n put a new bag of food in the tub well we got to the end of the tub n my kitty is sick again, loss of appetite, lethargic not dehydrated yet but not eating, i went thru the whole house n didnt find anything she could have gotten into! Im thinkin it was the cat food but it didnt affect her sister or any of the other cats.
I have tried EVERY KIND of canned cat food for my turkish angora and i'll be damned if Special Kitty in the chunky form with gravy is what she will gobble up. Everything else? She'd lick the gravy and leave the rest. That includes real salmon and tuna!
I've fed my 13 year old cat special kitty original formula since she was a kitten. She's always been healthy, and is still happy as can be. She does not care for the gourmet. Wal-mart please keep my kittys food on the shelf!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
