Will Anyone Speak with Me at the AAFCO Meeting?
- 12-30-2011
- Categorized in: Pet Food News, Pet Food Regulations

It is not looking positive. Thank heavens Dr. Jean Hofve (holistic veterinarian and pet food safety advocate) will be joining me at the AAFCO Meeting next month - without her, it might be no one even speaks to me at the meeting. Incoming AAFCO President Robert Waltz has not agreed to an interview and FDA Official Dr. Dan McChesney has not responded to two requests for interview.
I would assume that both incoming AAFCO President Robert Waltz and FDA Dr. Dan McChesney aren't happy with me; thus the cold shoulder. At last years AAFCO meeting - in front of a crowded room - I asked Dr. McChesney about the FDA Compliance policies that allow diseased and euthanized animals into pet food. I'd guess that didn't make him too happy to have to address one of the secrets of pet food in front of so many people. And I have to assume that incoming AAFCO President Robert Waltz isn't too happy that I published his refusal to be interviewed on camera and that I replied back in protection of pet parents.
I think there is a misunderstanding. I assume that these State (Robert Waltz) and Government (Dan McChesney) officials believe I have it 'out for them'. This is completely incorrect. Mr. Waltz and Dr. McChesney - I assure you, I have nothing against you personally.
What I am asking for is accountability. Each of you hold positions of great power in pet food safety. I believe and I assume many other pet parents believe that by holding such positions you should be accountable for your actions. If you truly believe that diseased animals or euthanized animals or other waste is acceptable ingredients in pet foods, then I ask that you share your beliefs on this with me and other pet owners. Give us your evidence as to how these types of ingredients can benefit pets. If you cannot provide solid reasoning for allowing such ingredients in pet foods, then I/we hold you accountable to change the regulations that allow this.
When you refuse to speak to me - you are refusing to speak to pet parents in general. When you continue to ignore me/us, refuse to answer the tough questions, I/we feel you (and by 'you' I mean your organization) have something to hide.
I understand that many of my/our questions are not easy to answer. But regardless how difficult the questions are, we deserve answers. It is hard for me to believe that you really think pet parents don't matter. However your behavior is showing us that.
You have a choice. You can continue to avoid the questions, wants, and needs of pet parents. With this decision will come further distrust of you and your organizations and further distrust of commercial pet foods in general. Is this really what you want? Or you can answer our questions. We don't have to agree, but at the very least you will be showing accountability for your (and by 'your' I mean your organization) pet food related actions.
We ask you to answer our questions. Agree to an interview - on camera. Show yourself to those that depend on the products you make decisions for.
Wishing you and your pet(s) the best,
Susan Thixton

Keep bugging them, Susan. Keep tugging on their coat tails until they look you in the eye and give you a straight answer.
They can't come clean about that or the bottom drops out of the pet food alchemy business. They will continue to treat Susan as a pariah. We all need to make it clear that pet parents do not consider food waste, styrofoam, euthanized animals, etc., acceptable pet food ingredients.
I have listened to Dr. Hofve when she is on Cat Chat on Sirius XM radio. She is perfect for this task. Thank you both for all your dedication in helping make food safe for our beloved furry family members.
This refusal by FDA USDA and others is more proof that our government agencies are ONLY an extension of Corporate Marketing and protection.
Our tax money is being used to promote and defend Corporations-to not only kill our pets but us as well.
They must not understand that we are not going to go away. It would be in their best interest to talk with you since so many of us trust you.
