MSNBC.com is reporting the FDA has received 353 reports of dog illness and or death related to Chicken Jerky Treats made in China.  Just last month, the FDA reported only 70 illnesses or deaths relating to the treats; a little more than a month later the total is up to 353.

Two More Aflatoxin Recalls

The FDA has released two more aflatoxin related pet food recalls (though both were dated two weeks ago).  Petrus Feed and Seed Store Dog Food and O'Neal's Feeders Supply Arrow Brand Dog Food.

Iams Puppy Food Recall

A couple of weeks ago it was a 'product pull' of several varieties of Iams Pet Foods due to "elevated aflatoxin levels".  This time it is an official recall "due to aflatoxin levels that were detected above the acceptable limit."  Product recalled Iams ProActive Health Smart Puppy Food.

What can happen when a Pet Owner isn't warned about a Product Pull

While there is no confirmation (lot numbers) that this pet consumed the pulled Iams dog food due to elevated aflatoxin levels, this pet owner story does provide evidence that something seriously went wrong.  Her dog was eating Iams Lamb & Rice - the same size bag listed in the recent Price Chopper product pull notification.  Here's the story...

Per Iams it was a Product Pull

The recall notice posted on the Price Chopper website, then promptly removed was "posted erroneously" according to a Iams Customer Service Representative.  The notice that three varieties of Iams pet food tested with "elevated aflatoxin levels" wasn't meant for public notice.  It was a product pull, not a recall.   Thanks to Price Chopper for doing right by petsumers or we wouldn't have even known about this.

Iams Recall

Thanks to TAPF friend the Food Bug Lady (aka Phyllis Entis/http://efoodalert.wordpress.com/), there seems to be an Iams pet food recall.  I could find no notice of this on the Iams website or the FDA website.

The Cost of a Pet Food Recall

Edie Lau of VIN News provided a breakdown of the money disbursement from the 2007 pet food recall.  A little over $12 million went to pet owners, $8 million went to attorneys, and $3.6 million went to claims administration and to pay for public notices.  That was the official breakdown, but my question is what did this horrible recall really cost?

Milk Bone Dog Biscuit Product Pull
