On May 13, 2008 the FDA will hold a public meeting ‘seeking input from stakeholder groups for the development of ingredient, processing and labeling standards to ensure the safety of pet food.”  The largest ‘stakeholder group’ – U.S. Pet Owners – can send the FDA a well crafted message by joining the ‘We’re sick of the crap in pet food’ campaign which will send a biodegradable poop bag to the FDA Pet Food Safety Meeting (get it...crap in pet food...poop bag!)

Here’s the poop…TruthAboutPetFood.com connected with Pets for the Environment and PoopBags.com for the ‘crap’ campaign which will send a personalized poop bag directly to the FDA Pet Food Safety Meeting next week – Tuesday May 13, 2008.  All pet owners that have hopes for safer and healthier pet foods are encouraged to make a minimal $5.00 donation for a poop bag to be delivered to the meeting in their name.  Each poop bag will be personalized with the pet owner’s name and your personal message to the FDA - then delivered to the Pet Food Safety meeting by ‘Eddie’ the Pets For The Environment spokes dog.  PoopBags.com has graciously donated the poop bags so that 100% of the proceeds can go towards the Pets for the Environment pet food testing fund.

Information regarding current pet food regulations:

  • Truth and consistency in pet food labeling.  Current regulations do not allow for pet food manufacturers to make any statement as to the quality or grade of ingredients.  Some pet food manufacturers use a human grade of meat(s) in their dog and cat foods, while others use a ‘pet grade’ of meat(s).  Higher quality manufacturers are currently penalized by existing regulations – not providing them the opportunity to make claims or statements regarding their use of human grade meats.  Thus average pet owners who are not aware of current regulations assume all pet foods are similar – which is far from the truth.  A USDA human grade/quality meat is far different than a meat ‘suitable for use in pet food’.  Please allow a means for pet food manufacturers to make statements as to quality or grade of ingredients.  Considering the on-going risk of imported ingredients – pet food labeling should also state country of origin of ingredients.  Pet owners deserve to know and easily scan ingredient listings to see what ingredients are US and what ingredients are imported.
  • Mandate Quality Control Practices.  Currently AAFCO only ‘recommends’ quality control practices to pet food manufacturers.  A nationwide standard of quality control practices should be mandated for the pet food industry.  Proper and mandated quality control could have possibly eliminated the December 2005 Diamond Pet Food recall and perhaps the recall of March 2007.
  • Removal of ‘stakeholder groups’ from advisory committees to AAFCO.  Currently there is at least one (in most cases several) representative from pet food manufacturing sitting on each advisory board to AAFCO.  Pet food consumers should have positions on these boards replacing the manufacturer representatives along with more representatives from Universities and Veterinary science.  No manufacturer (regardless if they are under the disguise of PFI or similar organizations) should have input on the rules and regulations of their own industry.
  • Removal of any pet food ingredient that contains pentobarbital.  The FDA/CVM has tested and released reports that many brands of pet food contain the euthanizing drug pentobarbital.  The common pet food ingredient ‘animal fat’ was determined to be the possible link between the drug and pet food.  While pet food manufacturers insist that no rendered euthanized dogs or cats (possible source of pentobarbital in pet food) are used in pet food – the CVM or any other source has ever definitively proved a species specific source of pentobarbital in pet food.  The number of euthanized dogs and cats in the US far outweigh the number of euthanized cattle and horses – the numbers imply the source of pentobarbital to be rendered euthanized dogs and cats.  Until a species source of pentobarbital can be clinically proven – the risk remains that the source is from rendered euthanized dogs and cats.  The pet food ingredient ‘animal fat’ and any other pet food ingredient that could contain pentobarbital should be removed from use until a definitive answer if found as to the source.  The FDA/CVM determined that the amount of pentobarbital in pet food to be safe for pets to consume – their test lasted for only 12 weeks, never considering the life long effects.  The Fish and Wildlife Agency reports that in recent years over 100 Bald and Golden Eagles have died from consuming euthanized carcasses of animals.  Heavy fines are placed on individuals that do not properly dispose of a euthanized animal.  The drug pentobarbital is a risk when consumed – all pet food ingredients that could possibly contain this drug should be removed from use.
  • Proper regulations for the rendering industry.  Currently there are little to no FDA regulations for the rendering industry – yet this industry provides many pet food ingredients.  Animal Fat, by-products, by-product meals, meat and bone meal, meat meal, animal digest and more are common pet food ingredients supplied by the rendering industry.  Without proper quality control, testing, and better regulations of the rendering industry – pets continue to be exposed to disease – including the possibility of BSE (mad cow disease).

Tips to Avoid the Next Pet Food Recall

Last year turned out to be the worst in history for pet food recalls.  While there is no way to be 100% certain that a pet food is not tainted or will be recalled, there are some important things to look for – and to avoid when selecting your dog’s or cat’s food - to greatly improve your odds in purchasing a healthy, safe pet food. Click Here to continue reading this article

Say bye, bye to pet foods with By-Products

A common ingredient found in dog food and cat food is by-products.  When you look at your pet food or pet treat label, you might see by-product, chicken by-product, turkey by-product meal, or a few more variations.  Most pet owners have never been told exactly what by-products are.  If you don’t know – don’t feel bad about it…my guess is that even the pet food manufacturers themselves can’t tell you exactly what by-products are in their own brand of pet food. Click Here to Read

Why it's important - 'Best By' Dates on Pet Food Labels

A recent article posted on The Consumerist web site brings up a very good point (and lesson) that pet owners should take note of…
The article comes from a pet owner whose Yorkie became ill, and after a couple of days in the vet’s office, the owner looked at her Eukanuba canned food and realized it had expired 3 years ago.  When she checked the cupboard she discovered several other cans of dog food – all recently purchased at PetCo – had expiration dates from 2004. Does the cost of better quality pet foods have you in 'sticker shock'?

Many pet owners suffer ‘sticker shock’ when considering purchasing a better quality food.  They look at the price tag and gasp when considering how fast Fido or Fluffy eats that bag of food.  What they don’t know is that with better quality pet foods, you don’t feed as much – cheap foods have cheap ‘filler’ ingredients that do not satisfy the nutritional needs of the pet, thus they eat A LOT more attempting to get the nutrition that their body is telling them they need.
