Petsumer Report
- Pet Food labels are legally allowed to lie to you. Regulations allow a pet food to make "unqualified claims, either directly or indirectly" on pet food labels. 'Healthy Weight' or 'Extend Your Pet's Life' might be an "unqualified claim".
- Although tainted Chinese imported ingredients were responsible for killing thousands of dogs and cats in 2007, although China continues to struggle with quality control, many pet food manufacturers continue to purchase cheap ingredients from China.
- Modern science has linked many common pet food ingredients to cancer and serious illness. Despite the option of healthier choices (costlier choices), many pet food manufacturers continue to use cheap, risky ingredients.
- The FDA, despite Federal law prohibiting it, allows pet food manufacturers to utilize sick, diseased, drugged and even euthanized animals as common pet food ingredients; camouflaged under less offensive sounding ingredient names.

Lilly with her Best Friend!
"I'm a new subscriber to your Petsumer Report and would like to first thank you for the work you're doing. I've been wanting to feed my dog a healthier diet for months, but kept reading conflicting and confusing advice. Your report gives me an easy-to-use, reliable resource. Thanks again for all your work. Sincerely,
Patti K. Kingston, WA"
"A friend told me about you years ago. She was reading all the information. Even listening to some Podcast. She told me a lot of bad things. Threw out all her dog food and just started feeding natural human food (with Vet recommended supplement). I always thought she was exaggerating being a "the sky is falling" kind of personality. Years later another friend told me about your column. She's been an advocate of "raw" dog food supplemented with healthy people food. She told me for only $20 you can get all this inside information - So why not try it? That was back in Feb '09. And it has changed me and the health of my dog. I continue to share your information with other friends."

You simply cannot decide on a dog food or cat food by looking at the front of the bag or can; this is marketing, it is not the truth about what's inside the pet food. Actually, the front of a pet food bag is legally allowed to lie to you. Pet food regulations state a pet food label can contain "unqualified claims, either directly or indirectly". Unqualified claims mean a pet food label can claim 'Premium' or 'Choice Ingredients' when the truth is far from premium or choice.
So, back at the pet store…how do you know which pet foods are making 'unqualified claims' and which pet foods are making honest, truthful claims on their labels? This is the next challenge pet owners are up against. Pet food regulations ALSO do NOT allow a pet food manufacturer to make any statements to quality or grade of ingredients on their label - some pet foods use the same quality of meat you'd purchase in the grocery, however they are NOT allowed to tell you this (yes, I know - it's ridiculous; rules allow them to make unqualified claims, but the same rules say they can't be honest). A quality minded pet food manufacturer, who uses the same quality of meat that you would purchase in the grocery for your family is NOT allowed to tell you that.

"Susan - I just wanted to say THANK YOU for offering such a resourceful website. I find your website easy to use and FULL of information. I just subscribed to Petsumer Reports today too and in less than an hour I was able to do all the research I needed to find the right food for my dog. He has been eating XXX but the high protein seems to be too rich for his stomach, so I was on the hunt for a new food. I am part of an animal rescue group in Phoenix, AZ called Lost Our Home Pet Foundation. Our mission is to take in foreclosure pets - animals that have been left behind when people move out of their house and abandon their pets. I foster kittens for the rescue group and I ALWAYS take the time to tell adopters about the high quality food I feed my kittens. I often get people who go out of their way to find the same food - all because I took the extra time to mention the importance of it. Thank you for putting Petsumer Reports together - I'm excited to use it on a regular basis as I am always talking to people about their pet food. And I especially like the red font for the Red Flag ingredients, the gray font for the ingredients with no nutrional value, and the PawPrint rating - that really helps sort through the good and bad quickly."
Sincerely, Wendy

Just because a dog food or cat food contains chemical preservatives or ingredients made in China doesn't necessarily mean that your dog or cat will become ill or die - but you do deserve to KNOW. Every pet owner deserves to know if a pet food ingredient is a lessor quality or if a pet food ingredient comes from outside the US. The pet food recall that began in March 2007 cost many pets their lives - no one even considered the possibility that a wheat gluten or rice gluten from China would kill their pet. No one knew that some pet food ingredients came from outside the US. Country of origin of ingredients and the quality/grade of ingredients should be listed on the label - but it's not.
The laws of the pet food and pet treat industry clearly state that a pet product manufacturer CAN NOT provide any information on the packaging or advertising as to the quality or grade of ingredients. In other words, you cannot tell by the packaging nor the advertising of the pet food if it is made from quality human grade ingredients or a far lessor quality pet grade ingredients. This law benefits the manufacturers that use inferior ingredients, and the law hinders the manufacturers that use quality ingredients. All dog foods and cat foods must look the same and appear the 'same'. Same ingredient names, same 100% Balanced, same everything - that is until you know the differences.
Pet Grade or Pet Quality Ingredients - needless to say, are NOT the same as human grade or quality ingredients. The rules of the pet food industry puts it this way..."Shall be suitable for use in animal food." Here is one of their secrets...'suitable for use in animal food' means the ingredient can be rejected for use in human food for any reason including (but not limited to) disease and drugs. Many ingredients that are deemed 'suitable for use in animal food' are considered unsafe for use in cattle, hog, or sheep feed for fear of future risk to humans with such diseases as Mad Cow. But these very same ingredients are rated as pet grade or pet quality - 'suitable for use in pet food.' And are used in many of the most popular pet foods and pet treats.

"Thank you for creating the Petsumer report. I rely on the information you provide. As I have previously mentioned I am now fostering a dog, one who is a very picky eater. When I began the process of deciding what food to give her, I poured over all your evaluations before choosing a brand. The information you provide is not available anywhere else! Your information has opened my eyes to what is really in pet food and pet treats. Until I read your information I thought XXX chews and XXX were great...now I know better. Anyone who wants to really understand the value of the ingredients in their chosen pet food should subscribe to the Petsumer Report.
I have attached a picture of April Mae, my foster baby and soon to become my adopted baby!"

To protect your pet, the very most important piece of information you must know about their food is if any ingredients come from China. Melamime has continued to make headlines for two years, and recent insider information from China tells us there are more serious concerns. Epoch Times reports that Dr. Wang Haizhen, a veterinarian from a Chinese Animal Pharmaceutical company has gone public exposing corruption in China's food industry. "The chemicals and toxic materials they are adding can easily have carcinogenic effects. Some of these additives are more dangerous than melamine." http://en.epochtimes.com/n2/china/china-food-industry-toxic-substances-7603.html
The next piece of information you should know about your pets food is if the meat within is of a human grade/quality (the same type of meat you would buy for your family), or if the meat within the pet foods (treat) is a pet grade/quality. Sick or diseased animals (or animal parts) that have been rejected for use in human foods can become pet food ingredients. The FDA's report 'Risk of Pentobarbital in Pet Food' provides evidence that some pet foods contain the drug pentobarbital, the drug used to euthanize sick animals. To read this startling report, Click Here. Pet foods that use a 'human grade/quality' meat will NOT use sick, euthanized animals. Call the pet food or pet treat manufacturer and ask if the meat is 'human grade' or 'pet grade'.

Do you feed canned foods to your pet? You should know if the lining of the pet food can contains BPA.
